Probably destroy them, or use them internally for tests etc.. Their
production cost can't be much above a 1000US$ per piece.

With that said I think I might be cashing in on my "opt out at 12
months"
lease option. If all this is still true then I would imagine I could
get a
spankin' new 515 with full sw and hw maint for less than it would cost
me to
keep my 520 - crazy.

What do they do with machines when they are done with the lease? Sell
them
on eBay?

Sooner or later you're going to get dinged for support.

Nope - unless it has changed, there is nothing in the BP agreement that
says
that the new machine you order has to be more recent/faster/bigger/etc.
The
lease allows you to change machines at the 12 month point (that's what
we
did with my previous company) and so your warranty maintenance clock
starts
over. We first discovered this when IBM wanted some crazy amount of
money
to reinstate our software maint but would give us a new system basically
for
nothing. After the original machine died as we were getting ready to
return
it to IBM swapping every 12 months started to look like a _really_ good
deal!
