yep it's a tool...but i wouldn't say it's laziness being the reason for
not knowing it....there are not a whole lot of places (read colleges, tech
schools, etc ) that teach the cycle anymore...not many teaching RPG at all
anymore either. so it could be a lack of resources to learn from. they
did teach the cycle (actually the first RPG course was RPG II ick) where i
went to college, they still do...but that's a rarity these days. most
people today are focusing on today & tomorrow's tools...not yesterday's
relics... from a business standpoint how much would you actually pay to
train someone in outdated technology??? not much. heck most businesses
won't even pay for training on current technology.

Thanks,
Tommy Holden

Re: RPG Cycle (was: RPG IV Certification)

I hear the exact same excuse/reasoning used by shop managers for not using
ILE techniques. "no one else will understand it".

why is knowing and using the cycle so different and/or more difficult than
knowing/using any other technique?

it's a tool, is not hard to learn and is part of the language. the only
excuse for not knowing it is laziness.

It is never appropriate - for one simple reason. If you have people who

I noticed there are still people writing blogs about the cycle and
people
teaching RPG with the cycle. If you work for them, you may be forced to
use
the cycle, but outside of maintenance, the RPG cycle should never be
used..

Job security coding techniques are as out of date as the AS/400!

Oh me ... me ... call on me! <jumping up and down>

Follow on question ... how many people can explain when it's
appropriate
to use the cycle and when it's not appropriate?
