yeah? well I can count apostrophes in my sleep. so there! ;-)

especially since I don't use double apostrophes for a single quote, I use
the double quote:

('fieldname *ne "' || &fldname || '"')

According to none other than the renowned Jim Sloan, FMTDTA works as
well,
if not better than OPNQRYF.

Plus, one does not need to count the apostrophes.

Hey if you are going to process an entire file sequentially, (by key
or
not), the cycle will buffer lots of records and greatly improve I/O.

"Entire file" has a lot of possibilities: with the use of OPNQRYF, it's
quite easy to use lots of your standard SQL selection and sorting
criteria.

And if you need to sort, select and summarize data, be it for report
purposes or even to create a subset for other use, then the cycle is
your
friend. Just try using SQL to print detail, subtotal and totals. It
can
be
done (think UNION), but it ain't easy.

And I am only 44

Whippersnapper.
