Joe,

See what Disk Controller you have in the 270. If you have a 4748
Controller with 26MB of write cache, consider a 4778 which has 104MB of
cache. We have done this very cheap upgrade for a few of our very small 270
class customers, and they were amazed at the results.

Yes yes. But I'll bet the xSeries is newer than your 270. It's not
physical size alone, it's air flow and power availability. And I'd bet
the 270 will run for years after the xSeries decides that something
isn't right and goes quietly south.

Oh, I know, Larry. I'm just grousing, mostly because I figured that a 50%
increase in disk speed would certainly justify any pain and suffering I
would endure whilst dipping my toe into iFranken territory. Ever since I
had to use an oscilloscope on an 8251 USART to debug a program, I have hated
hardware.

Ah well, I guess just knowing how to replace the drives is a plus. Since
I'm actually going to buy out this machine, I ought to know how to keep it
running...

I still hate hardware, though.

Joe
