One other thing too is that occasionally PTFs update the microcode of downstream devices such as tape and disk. If the PTF has already FUBARed the device even Rob's wise plan of re-slipping to a time before the offending PTF won't help. We've seen this occur as well and the only possible solution is to replace the (now failed) hardware.

There are numerous ptfs that will automatically apply themselves as permanent and totally bypass temporary. Once they are permanent you cannot bypass it by IPLing to A side. You cannot RMVPTF it. Your only resolution is to slip install the OS from a backup prior to the PTF. Always have a backup on media you can get to if your system is fried (Like, don't plan on slip installing OS from a virtual tape drive).
