Can you think of any other ways/reasons for so many invalid logon
attempts?

I believe that you can get this with a client access session set to:
- autoreconnect,
- use Windows name and password, no prompting

We had a bunch of users set to this by our PC specialist, who would advise
them to sync their passwords manually. It worked great until they were
forced to change their Windows password but the iSeries one remained
unchanged (and was not expired).

It was fairly obvious in the log files, as there was no way a user could
manually try an account signon that many times in shown amount of time.
What was a pain, and I never was able to find an answer for this, was to
find the IP address of the related system. We would have a computer with
this setting in an obscure office, a new user would sign onto it and
either not have an iSeries account or have one that didn't have the same
password as Windows. The user would open Client Access, leave the
completely black screen up (as the device would lock out) and we would get
hundreds/thousands of failed signon attempts.....
