To add to the excellent suggestions about QFileSvr.400 and NFS...
There's also symbolic links. For example, if your application needs a
file to be in /usr/local/share and in actually the file should be on
another computer, you can create a symbolic link between
/usr/local/share/myfile.ext and
/QFileSvr.400/otherserver.com/usr/local/share/myfile.ext

That way, you don't have to change the software. (Let me know if my
explanation was unclear -- sometimes it's hard to figure out how much
explanation is necessary)
