On related note, I could swear that I recall seeing a "earliest release
object can be restored to"
field for objects or something to that effect.
But I can't seem to find anything on v5r2 or in the v5r4 infocenter...
Am I losing it or what?

I can't point you to any documentation, but your question got
me curious, and I did a search on our system. We have user
programs created on V1R2 and V2R2 in current use on our
system, currently running V5R3M5.
