Hmmm...based on that....I'd think it might be your side. Obviously if
you were using the host table for the TCP/IP connection and the entry
was removed, that would cause a problem. The firewall could be an
issue too, especially if it's stateful and looking at the contents of
packets.

No, that's why I suspect a remote problem. However, two things bug me.

2. Our Network Consultant has been changing our firewall to fix a problem with
SSL FTP.
