I don't know about the 40% - but generally as the machines get older,
maintenance gets more expensive.

But i might consider 40% a bit too much just for this - maybe the BP used a
higher service level for comparing to a new machine?

And maybe the BP provided a discount for earlier maintenance contracts (there's
some room), but now wants to sell a new machine, and doesn't provide any
discount?

Maintenance for a 270 IS expensive, especially compared to a 515. It might be
that the 40% can be explained completely.

The 270 needs to replaced anyway, it's completely outdated hardware, and it
won't run the release after V5R4.
