You can take a look at the Printing redbooks. I suggest "Printing VII
Infoprint Server Implementation" There is a lot of information about how
to generate PDF documents. You will need licensed program 5722IP1
installed on your system i.
There are 3 articles with code downloads at MC Press Online by Giuseppe
Costagliola that convert spooled files into PDF documents.

These articles introduced me to iText, which is a free java-PDF library
that is pretty cool.
