Well maybe the create table as... solution is your best bet.

Thank you for your patience on my question. In pre SQL days one might
have used a multimember file instead of a plethora of new files (but that
wouldn't be for a migrated S/36 application). You could still do it for a
SQL file but that multimember file would be a "partitioned table" and
would have a field added that is often used as the member name.
