is Trevor funded by IBM or COMMON?
As Trevor has already said the answer is neither. The funding and time for
Angus has come out of his own pocket.
I think it is a bit of a sad comment that the first comment was not
"Congratulations Trevor!" but a question as to his funding. Such is the
state of the world I guess.
While I agree wholeheartedly that David makes an immense ongoing
contribution to the System i world and I'd love to have seen him win the
award as well, I have to believe that it was the "different" nature of Angus
that got the award this time around. Haven't we all been bitching about the
marketing of the system forever? Isn't Angus the first spot to have ever
realistically attempted to address that?
As to the "COMMON are idiots" type remarks - there are many days when I
agree with that sentiment - but in this case the folks saying might have
liked to have read up a bit more on how the awards work. There is an
independent group of judges drawn from COMMON members and IBM for each
category and the judges are not the same folks each time. They remain
anonymous (at least to the contestants) until after the announcements are
made. Having watched the amount of work Susan has put into this when she
was a judge (NOT in this category) I can attest to the thoroughness of the
process. All contestants are graded on a scale (out of five or ten?) by
each judge individually. On counting the votes if there is no clear cut set
of finalists then the panel discus and attempt to convince the others of
their choices - and so it goes until a winner is chosen.
It is my sincere hope that David is nominated again for next year's awards
and that he wins that he ends up the winner.
I also hope that a few of the folks who think he deserves it take the
trouble to nominate him - that does take a _lot_ of work which IBM's
nomination form doesn't make any easier!
