I am not sure if I am disappointed or not, until I find out what it cost
for each OS/i5 lpar on them. If they are cheap (for i5 prices) I will be
happy. I would also like them to price WDS (websphere Development
Studio) per user.
You might want to look at
http://www.itjungle.com/tfh/tfh021802-story02.html looks like 250's
for $4,800 I think this only included the OS and the new i5's come with
at least SQL/Query (on some configurations) and client access, and
adding users is about what client access was/is.
The specs for the 250
http://www-03.ibm.com/servers/eserver/iseries/hardware/small/250/
For comparison the 170 I run is a 2290 processor (73/20 CPW) came with
64 mb of memory, when I added the max memory 832 mb it did really speed
it up.
I guess you have to decide for yourself if getting more memory, disk,
power, and some software on the new i5's, but less users and warranty,
is a better deal then the older models. It looks like now I only would
need to add WDS, were I had to buy each compiler, PDM, SQL/Query, and
client access. And the memory and disk is cheaper and bigger then it
was before, still high.
This link says SQL/Query is N/A (not optional, but N/A) for option #1,
but WDS is optional, why would they do that?

Am I the only one who is a little disappointed by the recent announcements?

As best I can tell the new ones are a minimum of $8K and the configuration
at that level more than a little memory and disk constrained.
Maybe I'm mismembering, but surely there have been model 270s in this price
category before?
What am I missing guys? Right now it looks as if my hopes of owning a
system are back on hold again.
