Many releases ago you used to be able to do a 'select * into :MyExtDs..."
and if new fields were added and you did not recompile your programs the
worst that happened was that you got a small informational error. Then
some particular release came along and IBM made it a hard error.
I'd still use the external data structure, for field definitions, but I'd
only select the fields I really wanted. Yes, you will have to list them
on your into, though.
