"Need" is in the eye of the beholder.  I, like you, believe that, if you 
are going to use imbedded SQL, then, yes 5722ST1 is the product you'll 
need.  You can use something called "SQL CLI" for Call Level Interface. It 
has some capability that is not available within imbedded SQL, like 
reading a result set.  "I" (ymmv) find imbedded SQL easier to maintain 
than CLI.

With that out of the way...  Yes, 5722ST1 is what you need.  It is often 
included in a "Value Pack 5722-VP1" with iSeries Access, Query/400, 
Performance Tools, etc.  It's also included in many, if not all, "Express 
Editions".

But I can't seem to find the price.  Any attempts normally lead to some 
website that says one of the following:
"Call your freaking business partner."
"Click here to have Smiling Jack the Sales Guy call you when he's darn 
good and ready."
