You're right - left inner join doesn't really make sense.  You can think 
of it in terms of set theory.  If we have two sets, A and B, and inner 
join is sort of like "A intersect B".  Note that intersection is 
commutative, so "A intersect B" = "B intersect A".  An exception join is 
like set subtraction, but subtraction is not commutative so "A - B" <> "B 
- A".  Left and right essentially specify which set (or table) should be 
before the subtraction sign.  Outer join follows a similar rule, but it is 
a bit more complex of an equation to represent using set operations.  So, 
you can see that left and right are redundant for inner joins, because it 
doesn't matter which one is "first" in the equation.
