virtual tape/backup issues

We are considering using the virtual tape method in out backup process
and I am finding the information on this confusing.  Does anybody know
of a good source for virtual tape utilization and/ or backup theories
and methodologies for the iSeries.  We have limited disc space, a local
production iSeries, a remote DR iSeries and a remote tape drive.  We are
hoping that we will be able to copy one file at a time from physical
tape to virtual tape and vice versa - is this feasible and how would one
accomplish this?
