Well - it seems this was a simple matter of me mixing up two similarly 
named fields.  Very similarly named, in my defence :)  I only wish I could 
blame it on being Monday morning or something ...

At any rate, it makes sense now why there was an temporary access path 
built - I hope that at least this discussion on finding optimization info 
is useful to someone else.
