Brian, thank you your syntax LENGTH(RTRIM(field)) worked like a charm but
now I would like to use that information as parameter in SUBSTR function.  I
assigned an 'as' clause to each LENGTH clause to identify the information
but when I used the identity in the subsequent SUBSTR clause it informed me
that the identity was not in the table.  How now Brown Cow?
