I think we can all agree that having both the printed/PDF manual and the online help available is the right approach. Personally I tend to use the F1 approach as I'm not always at my desk to look up in a printed manual and using either a downloaded PDF or loading up InfoCenter simply takes longer. But then I'm normally only looking up a couple of messages; if I was a full-time programmer I'd probably have the PDF readily available.
