"If this field has this value, then do a particular subroutine" and there were hundreds of different possible values, and multiple fields.Many of the subroutines would then do a search to see if particular record contents followed. This was because in EDI you did not know what data flow was a coming, there was no master list of possibilities since it was open ended always more being added, our customers did not believe in standards, and the nature of the processing needed was dependent on combinations of different records.
HI, it's been many years, I have to set up a Data Dictionary for a new system for EDI. We use a third party for EDI, and they have made new files for us, more like flat files. All of the fields are Alpha.
