I'm coming from the perspective of already having a vague idea of what most of them do. Unix and variants usually have a command called "apropos", which AFAIK searches the description portion of the man page. There is an online "apropos" built in to the expert mode this site: http://www.nada.kth.se/cgi-bin/man for some details on how to use this site, see: 'http://www.nada.kth.se/datorer/externdok/man-on-the-web.html#index Perhaps with a combo of the two you could get somewhere. The book suggested earlier may be an easier way to start out though.
