Um, is it just me or shouldn't this be going through a hub/switch? I don't
recall the exact pinouts of a cat-5 cable but I'd be willing to bet that
going straight won't cut the mustard.

I do not have an HMC. Just a single 9406 520 machine.
Right now I have a super long peer-to-peer networking cable going from the
System i to my desktop and am trying to configure it that way. Is that an
appropriate way to do it?

Yeah they really emphasize making sure that your HMC is up and configured
before you even put a power cable to the 5xx box. Unhappiness may occur
otherwise.
