Damaged objects

We are getting periods where several virtual devices (telnet) are being flagged
as damaged.  Standard procedure, thus far, is to delete the object, create a
new one with a different name.  Or, wait until an IPL can be performed.

Anybody know why these display devices are being flagged as either damaged or
partialy damaged?  Is there another solution beyond deleting the device and
recreating with a new name?  Our sysadmin has been working with IBM since we
were on v5r2 and never received an explanation.
