To build and add on to what Rob started--

If you use or can use Tivoli Storage Manager on the system(s) that connect 
to the tape drive, you can use the BRMS with the "BRMS application client 
to TSM" to backup the i5 across the wire (LAN) to that drive.  Note that 
this will only backup user data, not system objects. 

So, a real system attached tape drive or the DVD-RAM (if you have one)  to 
save system objects on an occasional basis, and the BRMS/TSM stuff to save 
data nightly. 
I checked into this once, but have never implemented it for anyone.
