Thanks for the detailed response Al. Examples are always good! In this particular instance, defining a cursor is not what I need - I just to find out 'Which trailer does this refrigeration unit belong to?'. The trick is that if someone made a keying error or something there is a chance that two trailers could be associated with the same refrigeration unit, in which case I want to alert the "computer janitor". I have solved this by monitoring for the "multiple rows returned but only one used" error (SQL state 21000). I think I mentioned this earlier in the thread, but probably didn't make it clear enough.
