I had them check out the HMC and fans when they first installed it a year
ago. The response I got was "operating as designed". It was so loud I
complained, and got nowhere with IBM. I have had the CE look at it almost
every time he comes. He is getting tired of me complaining about the
noise. It is just that the 6 - 1 inch fans spin at jet speeds to cool the
1U unit. If it had been a 2U, the fans would have been bigger, and not as
noisy. I have even talked to the IBM people at COMMON last spring, and got
nowhere with them as well. I have 2 guys going to Miami this weekend, and
they are supposed to bring it up again. I have heard about the squeaky
wheel - I hope the loud fan gets some attention too! ;^)

Check out those fans. Could be rattling. They have replaced a fair
share. Also sometimes a plastic flappy thing that gets in the way.

Might be a warranty issue if you touch it with a screwdriver. Therefore,
if it isn't visible I'd wait until you can get your CE in for another
reason. Check out your cache batteries on your i5 and if they are getting
close, call the IBM guy in for that. ;-)

Re: First time buying System i5

The 1U unit is the loudest thing in the rack (it points right at my office
door!) If I had known that, I might have gone with the desktop version. It
would be quiet.
