SOAPBOX(*ON) You don't need to IPL that often! Those of us who grew up with the System/38 and the CISC AS/400's got into the habit of IPLing frequently, because we (could) run out of temporary addresses. That was with 48 bit addressing. When we got to RISC, 64 bit addressing is (not literally, but almost) infinitely better as far as addressing goes. If you IPL whenever you apply PTF's (hopefully every half year or so), that's plenty. For most non IASPed systems, once every 5 years is probably enough. (IBM hates when I talk about IASPs, because although they are getting better and better, they are still likely *WAYFAR from maturity. It's OK for them to hate me, as they seem to love Bill Gates more every day!) SOAPBOX(*OFF) Now, why does it take longer to do "stuff" after IPL. When you re-IPL the system (partition), it closes down many 'temporary' structures, which need to be rebuilt after the IPL. Closing down these structures/spaces (or whatever you want to call them), saves you disk space, but you need to expend the CPU to re-create them after the IPL, and re-use that disk space. We do an IMPL early Monday morning at 2:00 AM then on Monday night we kick off our nightly back up. This backup does not end until 8:30 AM Tuesday morning. But from Tuesday thru Friday the backup finishes before any arrives at work. Any thoughts will be appreciated.
