Another option with Excel ( any version) is to use the "Get External
Data" feature to point to a URL. This means you can turn off ODBC/JDBC
access entirely, and simply provide a different URL to each dataset
folks might need.   I did this at my last office, and it worked very
well.  Although older versions of Excel ( such as Excel 97 ) do not
deal well with large data sets using HTTPS.     I even automated the
setup for folks not well-versed in Excel by creating an IQY file and
hyperlinking to it from a webpage.  If you want to test this out, try
this hyperlink:

If you have Excel 2000 or better, the file should open into Excel
automatcally. With Excel 97, you have to manually import the file
after downloading it.

I don't recall a response to my question if called programs, stored
procedures, and the like are usable by PC based GUI tools.  I thought they
mainly "give me the file(s) to query" kinds of setup.
