I've never heard of a shop using anything but adhesive stock with the
labels attached. 
Getting the home rolled version may be a huge task.

We're going to be buying a 3573 Ultrium3 library with our new 520+ box

i'm seeing from the library's operations manual that it will have even
better capabilities if barcoded labels are used on the tapes.  I found a
spec guide for the labels from IBM, but i'm wondering what's typical for
labels on Ultrium2 and Ultrium3 media...

Is it easy to create your own barcoded labels according to your tape
labeling policies (our numbering would fit the spec quite well), or do
shops usually just buy prelabeled media?  I've never dealt with barcoded
tapes before...
