I tried it on a V5R4 system and got the same result as you.  Changed &ISO to
size 8 and then it bombed.  Then I tried:

CVTDAT     DATE(&DATE) TOVAR(&ISO) TOFMT(*YYMD) +
             TOSEP(*NONE)                        

And got '20060707' which is what I assume you wanted.

But it makes no sense to me to have the ability to say TOSEP(*NONE) if it's
going to put separators in there anyway . . .
