Re: Start i5 without HMC

You can start the machine from the front panel or from ASM. In either case if you do this then only partitions set to autostart will IPL. Other partitions are down until the HMC is available.
You can certainly (and I always do) update the HMC while the i5 is up and running. Unless you have SSH jobs that connect to the HMC to move resources (rare in my customer base) nobody will know the HMC is gone for a spell.
