Thanks.In this case, though, it appears that the problem was external to the system itself: the power coming out of the UPS it was connected to apparently dropped out long enough to crash the 170, the 40s, and the WinDoze box currently running our mail server (everything else on that UPS was inherently self-resetting).
No dip in the utility power. No red light on the front panel of the UPS. We're now officially very, very pissed at APC.
