Chuck, Jim: There is a TAATOOL named "QRYUSE" that "provides commands to capture and display the files used in a Query. Both Query/400 (*QRYDFN) and Query Management (*QMQRY) objects types are supported." So, if you have the tools (see http://www.taatool.com) you can get what you want without an IBM API.
