Perhaps I'm just neurotic (better than even odds on that), but I always check the "Defective PTF's" list and, where necessary, omit them from the install.

Also, prior to anything else, I actually print and read the cover letters with special instructions. The text file that comes with the download or on the CD explains how to do that.

I'm starting my cycle for the latest v5r3 CUME, but I'm also downloading the groups for everything on my system that has a higher level. The CUME and group levels currently on the system can be displayed using the WRKPTFGRP command. The PSP planning document (http://www-912.ibm.com/s_dir/sline003.nsf/sline003home) will show the current Level of each group (gotta drill down a couple of steps).

When you order a CUME, IBM now included the latest HIPER and DB group PTFs.
We always install them together; the HIPER group is the most volatile and
often contains PTFs that aren't included on the CUME yet.
We also install any other groups that are applicable to our systems and
that have been updated since our last application.

I use this web site http://www-912.ibm.com/s_dir/sline003.nsf/sline003home

CUME PTFs are identified by the year and julian day they were issued for
the release.
C6101530 means Cumulative PTF issued the 101st day of 2006 for V5R3M0
