Stiction is the slang word for what happens to disk drives that get a 
chance to cool off while the power is down. I had it happen to me a couple 
months ago. A client with two machines needed to upgrade the memory and 
disk on their production system. The cache battery was also replaced at 
the same time. In order to get the covers off the production system, the 
development system had to be moved out of the computer room.

The CE was delayed in his arrival with the battery. By the time he 
arrived, I had installed the memory and disk, and we were just waiting. He 
showed up, installed the battery, and fired up the production system. He 
verified everything was OK and left. When I moved the development system 
back into the computer room and powered it up, I heard the lovely sound of 
a disk drive not wanting to spin, and this was after being powered off for 
only 2 hours. That drive would not spin up no matter what I did. We 
finally had to get another drive and perform a full reload.

Your comment about powering off your machine for a few hours just makes me 
a little nervous for you, that's all. 

If you need to preserve reports, check out one of the tools that can 
convert a report into a PDF and place it into the IFS. Once it's there, 
you can burn those reports off to a CD. My preference is the RJS Batch 
Report Server.
