What do you call those groups that are brought in to try out the new stuff? Focus groups?
Whatever the name, Microsoft has one of the best practices in the industry for this. They thrive on user input, only they get it from watching the users, not interviewing them. 

On that basis I am not sure what Alan Cooper is trying to say
