Not a roll-your-own type solution, but S4i Express can monitor an IFS
directory for new files, read, burst and bundle pages based on the
contents.

In researching the issue, I found that "reading PDFs" can be too vague a
term. With the ubiquity of PDFs I assumed that a program that could read
one PDF would be able to read them all. As the old song says, "It ain't
necessarily so!"

Beyond having the text saved internally [not combined into one big image],
formatting differences can throw the reading software off. The solution
we ultimately choose [S4i] will require a PTF to read the documents
produced by Formsprint. I would have never known if I hadn't asked for a
demo using the tools in question.
