Charles: I don't know. Might be better. I put the idea to the list to see who would comment as well as because I believe the power-cycle test is good in itself. My thought was that most problems I've run into would be apparent soon after powerdown. In addition, _some_ problems are related to minute tolerance differences. It used to be (apocryphal?) that the old 9332(?) drives had a reputation for failing after spindown/spinup when they'd been in use continuously for long periods. The fix could be as easy as a whack on the case with a rubber mallet or simply letting it shake itself during the power cycling. If any such problems still exist with drives today, the powerdown/up would serve a secondary purpose doing a "shakedown" as early as possible in the process. OTOH, a full temperature test might actually generate trouble. (I have no idea, purely random thought. DASD technologies today are past me.) I'd be interested in knowing if it really added to the process. Either way, finding out that parts need to be ordered early could mean that everything is available as soon as the box arrives at the new site. Might as well make use of the downtime while in transit. Tom Liotta
