Actually, so far as I can determine, an auto-terminator Y- or T-fitting (or in some cases, a rectangular gizmo that bolts into a recess on the back of the terminal) only auto-terminates if a connector is vacant. But I could be mistaken.

Because of our use of Twinax switch-boxes, we've installed T-fittings on a couple of our Twinax lines, with no ill effect from having a line terminated twice. So long as the auto-terminators, and the terminals, are genuine IBM. I think we once had a situation, though, where double termination dragged the whole line down.
