I ran into the same thing once. I seems like the system was not completely
"re-set" before it left the plant.

I personally think the the battery trick is very hoaky.

Subject: OP Console and HMC=0

Hi,

While installing a new 9406 model 520, we've ran into a problem of OP
Console connection, I'd like to share with you.
The machine was delivered without HMC, nor twinaxe, but with a #2771 OP
Console card.
After Power On (D M) in order to install LIC form DVD-ROM, we got
HCM=0 on the display. No access to 65+21 functions on the control
panel,
the numbers stopped at 64. So, we were incapable of activating the
connection between the #2271 card and the PC (XP-Pro).

IBM told us to install the Windows Modem Driver in addition to the iSeries
Access installation, which we hadn't done, but still no connection
possible.

We then tried, with ASMI, to reset all Factory Settings, with no positive
results.

Finaly, IBM told us to isolate the battery on the HMC card, wait for at
least 30', and then power on again. It was only then that we could access
25-26-66 and other 65+21 functions. Of course, you loose settings entered
before (Date & Time, machine name, ...) but at least it helps ! We then
activated the modem with 25-26-66, set the console connection to 02 with
65+21 functions, and finaly could logon to the system.

Lost much time, though ! Maybe this could be a help to someone once.

Regards,
