I don't think it's a "black helicopters" thing.  But you may be right 
about the different goals and needs.  When I helped start a Domino LUG in 
Fort Wayne the first meeting was literally standing room only.  They would 
probably have different needs than people who frequent the rpg400 list. 
One person on our LUG board is encouraging us to broaden our meetings and 
not have them become strictly BOF technical sessions.
