A few days ago I wrote:

Well, since no-one has responded, I assume no-one knows the answer.
Fortunately Dave Robertson at IBM's Remote Email Support service did, and he
has given me permission to post his reply, for posterity and the archives:

Even without the Service Pack, this fixed our problem.
