If you are doing a scratch install of the LIC, then you should have the Alt IPL device in the CEC. If this is an LPAR machine, as a secondary LPAR on an 8xx class box you can specify exactly which IOP for 8xx type LPAR. If this partition is on an i5 controlled by an HMC you can specify IOA or IOP for an HMC controlled i5. In addition, you can now use an Alternative Installation device (which is a little different than an Alternative IPL device) as it no longer matters where the adapter is if you load your LIC from a CD (use the I_BASE CD). Once LIC is installed, then you have the ability to select whichever bus the tape drive is on that you desire to load OS/400 from while you are at the DST installation menu. This is extremely useful. Pete Jerry Draper wrote: I recently did this. It is helpful if the scsi adapter is on the system buss instead of the extension buss. Jerry Quoting Jeff Young <cooljeff913@xxxxxxxxx>: It must be SCSI address 0 to function as an IPL device. The controller must also be in a specific slot reserved for IPL. The best way would be to IPL from the IBASE CD, then select Alternate Install Device from the IPL menu and select your tape drive. Dave Snyder <dsnyder@xxxxxxxxxx> wrote: I need to quickly set up my 3570 tape drive as an IPL device. How do I go about doing that? I seem to recall that it has to be set at a certain SCSI setting - is that correct? It is in the system unit of my 820 and I could potentially move it to a different slot if needed.
