Upgrading to new firmware thru HMC and CUM set backup strategy.

I've just upgraded our HMC for our 9406-520 to V5R1.  Now I need to
upgrade the Firmware to 01SF235 and then install the latest CUM set.  My
question is, what is the best backup strategy in this situation.
Normally before we had the HMC I did a SAVSYS 21 before and after the
CUM set, now I'm not sure what I should do before the Firmware upgrade.
