Now that's an interesting thought.  I was thinking about creating my own
"dummy" file for this if nothing else turned up.

Out of curiosity, does the select actually retrieve the row if all it does
is execute the UDF?

No you're not mistaken, but how about:

Select function(parm,parm,parm) from sysibm/sysdummy1

SysIBM/SysDummy1 is a file IBM supplies that has one row and one column.
Very useful for doing SQL things that don't involve "real" data.
