I agree that my little pipe has a lot of problems. I was hoping to use it as a starting point for further thinking rather than as an answer. Perhaps something I mentioned would be useful to the poster in creating the script he needs.
Why would he port the GNU tools to the iSeries, so that he can use the non-standard GNU extension to LS that gives the date in ISO format, when it doesn't even help him solve his problem? And the closest thing to solving it that you can come up with has so many problems?
Seems to me he'd be better off using using FIND the way he's using it now (and being careful not to create a directory that ends with the letters ".txt") or to write a program that works the way he wants it to.
