.doc files with a tllde as first character are normal - they are created when a file is opened by Word and deleted (usually) when the file is closed. Sometimes they get orphaned, and you have to delete them manually. No big deal, just part of using Word.

I did a google on "tilde temporary word" and found a couple items:

"Description of how Word creates temporary files" at
 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/211632/EN-US/

"How to recover a lost file in Word 2000" at

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q316950

"Word Slow to Open Documents" at
 http://wordtips.vitalnews.com/Pages/T0960_Word_Slow_to_Open_Documents.html

"<http://blogs.officezealot.com/joe/archive/2004/02/04/1287.aspx>Sticky ~Word<http://blogs.officezealot.com/joe/archive/2004/02/04/1287.aspx> Temp Files" at

and many more.

You might toss this question over to the PC-TECH list here.

A client of mine with a lightly loaded 170 with V5R1 is using the IFS to store their Word documents. They are using Word 2000 and XP pro on their Pc's. They are finding that Word does not always delete the .tmp files that it creates. They did find that this happened when the files were held on a PC, but believe that it happening more frequently on the IFS. Word is also creating .doc files with a ~ as the first character of the file name and not deleting them. They cannot delete these files manually but should not need to do so as it should be automatic. I assume that this is a Windows/Word problem? Has anyone idea how to delete the .tmp files manually? You can do it on a PC but not on the IFS. Does anyone know how to make Windows/Word delete them automatically?

Many thanks
