V5R1 is coming to end of service this week. This is probably the last
chance to get V5R1 PTFs, at least through "normal" channels. I know of
at least one PTF that is not in any of the groups or cumes (this is
SI16414 needed to run Softlandign's Subversion on V5R1), so I'll get
that in addition to all the groups and cumes.

Just going through this exercise myself. Last Cume for 510 was C4300510 which was ages ago. New bunch of Hipers released on 6th Sept 2005. New Java Group level 25 (downloads 2 PTFs electronically) released on 28th June 2005.

How about anything else? Are there JDKs 1.4 and 1.5 available for V5R1?

JDK 1.4 is available via PTF SI05336. Search support site for installation instructions. Note: That I followed the instructions and although JDK 1.4 is successfully installed it doesn't run. Gets MCH3402 during JVM initialisation. Current open problem with IBM on this issue. Other JDK work OK on this system.

There are also additional Java enhancement PTFs for 1.4.2 that are not on Cume, Hiper, or Group:
        5722ss1-si18807
        5722jv1-si17769
        5722jv1-si17782
        5722jv1-si18336
        5722jv1-si19229
        5722jv1-si19229
        5722ac3-si19228

Update PASE stuff?

Plenty of PASE PTFs but most of them seem to be on Cumes. No update to the level of AIX supported by PASE nor for additional AIX utilities.

I don't know... is there anything else you can think
of that I should be ordering for a box that's going to stay at V5R1 for
at least a little while?

In general, as long as you are still paid up on support you will be able to download electronic PTFs for a long time yet. IBM may choose not to accept new support calls and may also choose not to ship PTFs that require CDs but I've found that it takes a while for the process to completely stop. Sometimes they continue to issue Hipers after official support has stopped if the problem is serious enough.

If you have the latest Cume, latest Hipers, and latest Group PTFs for all your installed products then you should be fine. I did the same thing for 440 and 450 just prior to end-of-support and ran one system on 440 until Christmas 2004.

Regards,
Simon Coulter.
